Steel Mills
Steel mill operations demand precise, powerful braking, and the choice of brake system revolves around the power available onsite. AC thruster drum and disc brakes are renowned for reliability in heavy machinery, built for very hot environments and controllable with a Variable Frequency Drive for exact braking. Electric-type brakes excel in high-temperature environments, outperforming hydraulic and pneumatic alternatives — and older steel mills that run on “dirty” DC power integrate seamlessly with Johnson Magnetic Disc and Drum Brake systems, whose control circuits include a filter to ensure smooth operation even with dirty DC power present.
AC thruster drum brakes offer superior control for applications demanding modulated brake torque, while DC magnet brakes excel at both static and dynamic holding, with adjustable brake torque for diverse steel industry needs. Ladle crane applications often use VFD-controlled foot pedal brakes, giving operators precise, minute adjustments from a slight deceleration to an immediate halt — used for transporting molten steel in a ladle with soft, gradual stopping.
Applications: Gantry cranes, submarine ladle cars, forming drums, hot strip mill coil rollers, and cold rollers. Configurations available in electric AC/DC, hydraulic, or pneumatic.
