Marine applications include propulsion shaft brakes, rudder control brakes, maneuvering brakes, winch brakes, hoist brakes, and deck crane brakes. Air-applied, spring-release caliper brakes are used for vessel maneuvering, emergency stopping, and static holding.

For specialized naval applications, Johnson has supplied non-ferrous (non-magnetic) fail-safe, spring-applied/hydraulically-released disc brakes for winch systems installed on U.S. Navy Mine Sweeper vessels around the world, where standard ferrous components would interfere with the vessel’s mine-sweeping function.
