Escalator
Escalator brake systems require a dual approach: a service brake fitted between the motor and gearbox for everyday stopping, and an emergency brake fitted to the headshaft to protect passengers if the drive train fails. Through our Elevanja division, Johnson has supplied both halves of that system to some of the busiest transit networks in the world.
On the London Underground (Transport for London), Elevanja has supplied DA/SMAA magnetic drum brakes for service duty and CU/CX magnetic disc brakes for emergency duty across hundreds of escalators in stations throughout the network — a relationship that has continued for decades. The longest of these installations is at The Angel station, a 61-metre escalator with a 27-metre rise that was the longest in Europe when it was built. Elevanja has also supplied CU2 magnetic disc brakes used on New York subway escalators.
